Swimmers raise over £16k for Marie Curie Cancer Care

The 140 swimmers who participated in April's Swimathon 2010 at Larkfield Leisure Centre and Tonbridge Pool have raised an amazing £16,415 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon Foundation. 515 pools took part in the event across the UK and raised £2 million in total.

This great result was delivered in a letter of thanks from The Swimathon Foundation President, Duncan Goodhew MBE, who visited Tonbridge Swimming Pool in July of this year to launch the pool's centenary celebrations. In his letter, Mr Goodhew passed on his thanks and appreciation to the Councillors, management, staff, volunteers and customers of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council's leisure centres who made the achievement possible.

70 per cent of all money raised by Swimathon goes directly to Marie Curie Cancer Care.  This fundraising allows Marie Curie Nurses to provide more day and night care and support to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses.

The additional 30 per cent of funds raised will be distributed by The Swimathon Foundation which provides funding for smaller, local charities and other not-for-profit organisations, which benefit the health and wellbeing of people throughout the UK.

Martin Coffin, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council's Leisure Cabinet Member for Leisure, Youth and Arts commented: "We are delighted that so many people donned their goggles to swim for Marie Curie Cancer Care.  Swimathon 2010 was a really fun event to organise and it brought out a fantastic community spirit at the pools.  Many of the spectators who came to support friends and family on the day said they would like to join in next year, so we're looking for an even bigger turnout in 2011."
